maintaining leather goods

Hi, wonder how to maintain leather shoes and gloves, i.e. how to keep them in gd condition when not in use for a period of time?Apply leather oil b4 keeping?Can keep gloves in drawer?Can keep shoes in box or must air them every now and then?Thks! ^-^
