Which DSLR would you recommend buying for a beginner?

I'm a beginner at photography and would like to buy a DSLR. I used SLR in the past, but that's now passe so would like to upgrade. But I haven't been doing any research for a long time, so anyone can recommend a good beginner DSLR? Maybe about $1K-$1.5K for body and lens. Thank you in advance.

    suggest u go for Canon S3 ...not SLR level but good enough to take decent good shots...comes w 12x zoom + good Macro function. and very portable not bulky.
