Modify your vehicle correctly – what’s allowed (Pt 2)

The Land Transport Authority’s guidelines for vehicle modifications are to ensure that standards for road safety, vehicle exhaust gas and noise emissions are not compromised, not because it wants to be a spoil-sport.

Would-be buyers of second-hand vehicles are advised to check that modifications on a car they are eyeing are legal before committing to the purchase.

This list is not exhaustive. For further advice and clarification on specific modifications, vehicle owners can contact the Vehicle Engineering Department of LTA.

Steering wheels

Any modification to original airbag-equipped steering wheels must be carried out in consultation with the vehicle manufacturer or its agent.

Gear knobs

The aftermarket gear knobs should be securely fastened in accordance with the product manufacturer’s recommendations.

Meters and gauges

Additional meters and gauges shouldn’t obstruct the driver’s view or interfere with existing vehicle controls or instrumentation.

The system must not interfere with existing vehicle controls or instrumentation in any way. The electrical system must be adequately protected against fire hazards.

Roof racks
  1. The roof rack must be suitable for the vehicle.


  2. The roof rack must not protrude from the vehicle body laterally and/or longitudinally.


  3. The loads (cargo and its carrier) on the roof rack must not exceed the loading capacity of either the vehicle or the roof rack.


  4. The cargo must be securely fastened to the roof rack. No part of the cargo or its carrier should project laterally beyond the vehicle.
Seat belts

(Aftermarket 5-point seat belts, etc)

  1. The seat belts must be anchored to proper seat belt anchorage points in the car.


  2. They must comply with internationally recognised standards.


  3. Installation must be carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with the seat belt manufacturer’s recommendations.


Note: Any device such as a belt stopper that may hinder the proper operation of the seat belt should not be used.

Side skirts
  1. They should not protrude from the car body laterally.


  2. They should not have sharp corners and edges.


  3. The lowest point of the side skirts should not make contact with the road surface at any time.
Spoilers
  1. They must not protrude from the car body laterally and/or longitudinally.


  2. They must not have any sharp corners and edges.


  3. They should not obstruct the driver's view in any way.
Sports rims
  1. The size of the sports rims should be in accordance with the car manufacturer's recommendations.


  2. They must not protrude from the car body laterally.


  3. The overall rolling radius of the original wheels and tyres should not be altered.
