Buying a sedan
By: Goh Mei Yi

.........................................................................................

The sedan car, also known as a saloon, is the most popular type of car in Singapore. It can seat four or more people, has a three-box configuration and comes as a four-door or two-door model with a separate boot and fixed roof that is full-height up to the rear window.

How do you decide which model is for you? Do comparison-shopping with a list of these features.

Engines and transmissions

Most marques will flaunt the engine system they developed as one of the car’s selling point. For example, Toyota has the VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence system), Honda has the VTEC, (Variable Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control) and Nissan uses the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Look for an engine that operates smoothly and quietly.

Automatic transmission cars are more popular because of the relative ease of driving them. However, manuals provide better performance and fuel economy, and allow the driver to be in full control of the car.

Front-, rear- or all-wheel drive

Most sedans have front-wheel drive. Increasingly, luxury and sports cars use rear-wheel drive, which typically provides better handling and steering. Others have permanent or part-time all-wheel drive offering better traction, but these consume more petrol.

Seating

Most sedans provide seating for five passengers – two in front and three at the back. A centre rear seat with a three-point safety belt is a safer option than a lap belt.

If your rear-seat passengers are going to be children, rear leg room may not be a priority. But if they’re adults, especially big and tall ones, leg space is an important consideration.

Cargo space

When comparing boot space, don't look at just the overall size, but also at the dimensions of the boot opening and method of release. Some boots may be cavernous, but the size of the opening may be narrow, which presents a challenge when putting in long objects.

Many cars have a lockable fold-down rear seatback that allows cargo in the boot to extend into the cabin. A split-back design is the most versatile because one side can be folded down while a person occupies the other rear seat.

Safety features

Most cars offer dual front air bags, three-point safety belts with pre-tensioners, head restraints and anti-lock brake system. Some higher-end models offer optional side air bags and air curtains to protect against side crashes and rollovers.

Other safety features to look out for are electronic stability control (ESC), brake assist and the LATCH system to secure child seats.
