Mud, dust, bird droppings and goodness knows what else splatters your car every time you drive on the road. If you don’t wash your car regularly, all these contaminants will accumulate and take a toll on the paintwork – not a pleasant sight.

Wash

The paintwork needs regular care to look its best, so don’t be lazy and think driving through the rain will suffice. First, choose a suitable soap meant specifically for cars. Household detergents may be too harsh and strip the wax. Use cloths and sponges designed for washing vehicles.

Rinse your vehicle thoroughly to remove loose debris before the actual washing begins. Then start at the top of the vehicle. The bottom of the car, particularly behind the wheel wells, accumulates the most dirt. Washing from top down minimises the risk of transferring contaminants in the water to the wash sponge, thus reducing the chances of scratching the paintwork. Wipe your car dry immediately after the wash to prevent unsightly water spots.

Wax

The main goal of waxing is to protect the top layers of paint. High-quality car wax stays on the car for three to four months, so waxing needn’t be as frequent as washing. Waxing gives the car a shiny look and helps shield the paint from the elements, protecting it from fading. Wax forms a thin transparent layer which “seals” the paint and covers minor scratches so they look less visible.

Work in a shady area, and only when the car surface is cool to the touch. Your car must be very clean and dry to begin with. Work on one section at a time.

Try parking your car in a shaded area or covered carpark whenever you can to protect the paintwork from sun damage.
