No, there's no mistake in my headline. I think I'm a fairly considerate person on the road and on the pavement; but at times, the behaviour of other road users leaves me with feelings of disappointment and disgust.
Here are some resolutions I hope both motorists and pedestrians will make for 2008.
Pedestrians
I will use the proper pedestrian crossings
The reason why the Government spends money building overhead bridges and putting up new traffic lights is to ensure the safety of road users.
I find it sad that not everyone appreciates the effort. There will always be people determined to take the risk of dashing across the road because they don't want to climb stairs.
Perhaps the Government should embark on a marketing campaign to drive home the message that every person has a stake in overhead bridges because they are built with taxpayers' money.
(Note: If all else fails, Singapore could initiate a new global competitive sport - the 50m traffic light dash - whoever makes it to the other side first regardless of whether the lights are red or green without causing an accident, wins)
I will not teach my kids to jaywalk
It's bad enough the adults are doing it - but with children in tow? You're sending out the message that it's okay to force other people to give way to you even when you're in the wrong. How can we eradicate such behaviour when it's taught to the next generation?
I will not use a mobile phone while crossing the road
If that phone call or SMS is so urgent, why can't you finish that call or type that message first, and then cross the road? I've seen people yakking away or jabbing at their phones, oblivious to the fact that the green man turned red a few seconds ago. Even worse are the jaywalkers doing this - two wrongs do not make a right.
Motorists
I will use the indicator when I want to make a turn
In case you're mistaken, getting your driving licence doesn't mean you can stop flicking on the signal light before making a turn. You're supposed to continue doing that.
Using the indicator doesn't affect petrol consumption or the lifespan of the car battery. You are potentially saving hundreds of dollars when you signal your intent because showing your intent lowers the risk of an accident.
I will not tailgate
Not only are you stressing the driver in front of you, you are actually wasting petrol by driving aggressively. While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed, mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 95 kmh. Rapid acceleration and braking also lower your mileage.
I will not bully P-plate drivers
Give the guy with the P-plate a chance - you forgot you were once like him too! I have not experienced this personally (I got my licence before P-plates were introduced), but I've seen it happen when drivers force P-platers to give way to them.
