Can I park here?
Don’t get yourself a hefty fine or worse, your license revoked by parking in an illegal space.

Yes, we all know about your parking woes, and how you can’t find a parking lot at your favourite hawker centre come dinnertime. But is it worth taking the risk of parking illegally and getting fined?

Definition of Parking

Motorists should be aware that the legal definition of parking is to bring a motor vehicle or a trailer into a stationary position and cause it to wait for any purpose other than that of immediately taking up or setting down persons, goods or luggage.

Consequences of illegal parking

Drivers who violate parking restrictions may receive a parking ticket and get demerit points. However, there are far more serious consequences of illegal parking than fines or demerit points.

Parking illegally might save you a few minutes or a few dollars, but you might obstruct pedestrians or other motorists, causing serious or fatal accidents.

Roads with no parking restriction lines

Absolutely no parking is allowed on all expressways, flyovers, underpasses or the ramps leading to any flyover or underpass, slip roads or filter roads, roads with a centre divider which only allows for the passage of one vehicle, and roads with speed limits of 60kmh and above. Although parking restriction lines are not drawn on these roads, parking is not allowed at all times.

Roads with parking restriction lines

Parking restriction lines are found on roads with speed limits of below 60kmh. These are usually smaller roads with high vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

Different types of parking restriction lines

Continuous double white lines at the centre of a two-way road or between lanes

No parking on both sides of the road and no crossing of the double white lines

Continuous single white line at the centre of a two-way road

No parking on both sides of the road at all times

Continuous single yellow line at the edge of a road

No parking on that side of the road between 7am and 7pm except on Sundays

Continuous double yellow line at the edge of a road

No parking on both sides of the road at all times

Single white zigzag line before or after a zebra crossing

No parking, waiting and overtaking at all times

Single yellow zigzag line at the edge of the road

No parking on that side of the road at all times. Stopping for passengers to board or alight is permitted

Double yellow zigzag lines at the edge of the road

No parking, waiting or stopping on that side of the road at all times
