Be a responsible motorist
You may be a veteran driver but after years of passing your driving test, you may not remember the meaning of some road signs. Here’s a refresher course.

Every road user has an equal responsibility to make the roads safe and prevent accidents. Whether you’re still under probation or have many years of experience, always obey the traffic rules.

Drive with care at school zones

The roads near most school gates have a red textured surface to make the school zone more obvious. Prominent traffic signs also indicate the start and end of the zone to remind motorists to drive carefully.

Slow down and drive more carefully as you approach a school zone; be extra vigilant for children crossing the road during school peak hours. If you send your children to school, drop them off and pick them up at a safe and proper place.

Obey traffic light signals

The red, amber and green traffic light signals each convey an important message and help to move traffic smoothly. In case you have forgotten or misunderstood what each signal means, here’s a quick revision:

RED: Stop. Do not start moving until the green light appears in your favour.

AMBER: Stop unless you are so close to the stop-line that you cannot come to a standstill safely.

FLASHING AMBER: The traffic light signals are out of order. Proceed with caution and give way to traffic on the right.

GREEN: Go. Look to the right and left before you move off to ensure that it is safe to proceed.

When you approach traffic junctions with arrows, each colour indicates a different action:

RED ARROW: Stop behind the stop-line in the direction indicated. Do not turn right even if there is no traffic from the opposite direction.

AMBER ARROW: Get ready to stop behind the stop-line in the direction indicated.

GREEN ARROW: Go in the direction indicated.

Comply with road markings

Those white and yellow lines on the road tell motorists what they can or cannot do.

Centre broken white line on a two-way road: Vehicles should keep to the left of this line.

Double broken white lines: Give way to traffic on the major road.

Stop line: Stop to check the traffic situation ahead before moving off.

Centre white line: Vehicles should keep to the left of this line. No parking on both sides of the road at all times.

Centre double white lines: Vehicles are not allowed to cross the lines. No parking on both sides of the road at all times.

Single yellow line: No parking on that side of the road between 7am and 7pm, except on Sundays and public holidays.

Double yellow lines: No parking on that side of the road at all times.

Single yellow zigzag line: No parking on that side of the road at all times. Stopping for loading and unloading of passengers is permitted.

Single white zigzag line: Advance warning of the presence of a zebra crossing. No overtaking, waiting or parking in the vicinity.

Double yellow zigzag lines: No stopping on that side of the road at all times.
