Now that we’ve run the whole gamut of regulatory dos and don’ts, let’s move on to the sales contract. As with many other types of transactions, the purchase of a vehicle is governed by the sales contract between you and the seller. So scrutinise it to make sure that you’re getting what you want.
   
Here are some things you should look out for:
Model Description
  • Minimally, the sales contract should contain information like model name, engine capacity and year of manufacture.
Price
  • You ought to know what how much you’ll be expected to fork out.
  • Check also on what the price covers. Does it include a guaranteed COE? Or are you expected to pay more in the event that the cost of COE turns out to be higher than expected? Does it also cover road tax and insurance?
  • Also check out the kinds of accessories you’ll be getting and the upgrades you’re entitled to. For example, perhaps the sales person has promised to upgrade your wheels with sports rims. Make sure that’s in the sales contract.
  • In brief, know what you’re getting for your money.
Color
  • This is so that there won’t be any room for dispute should you get a pink car when you had actually wanted an elegant black coat of paint.
Deposit Amount
  • How much down payment do you need to commit?
Payment Terms
  • When, how often and how much do you need to pay?
Delivery Time
  • When you can get your car.
Warranty / After-Sales Service Packages
  • Make sure the sales contract specifies the warranty period.
  • Check to see whether you have any service packages like, for example, free servicing for a certain period of time.
